How to reset Internet Explorer 7 or 8 settings

If you are using Internet Explorer to browse the web, it can sometimes cause your computer's default settings to change - without your notice.

Default factory settings include things like privacy settings, security settings, pop-up settings, etc. And changing these, Internet Explorer could also pick up add-ons (like tool bars) too.

Changes like this can affect the performance of your browser, and also compromise your computer's security settings. It could also mean that you can accumulate temporary internet files, cookies and history files. These are nothing to worry about, but they do take up space on your hard disk, so you might want to remove them.

If you'd like to get rid of them, and return your Internet Explorer 7 or 8 browser to its default factory settings, here's how to do it:

To manually reset Internet Explorer settings:

1. It is advisable to close all the pages that are currently open.

2. Click on 'Start', and then click on 'Internet Explorer' to open up an Internet Explorer or click 'Start', click 'run' ( In Windows Vista, click 'Start' then click 'Search'), then type iexplore and click 'OK' to open Internet Explorer

3. In Internet Explorer window click 'Tools' from the menu bar, and now select the 'Internet Options'.

Note:Another alternate way to gain access to the 'Internet Options' is through the Control Panel. Open the 'Control Panel' and double click on 'Internet Options'

4.   Click the 'Reset' button under the 'Advanced tab'.

5. If the Browsing History/Home pages/Search Providers/InPrivate Filtering data/Accelerators are to be deleted, then ensure that the 'Delete personal settings' check box has been selected.

6. Select the 'Reset' button under the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.

7. Click on 'Close' as soon as the default settings have been applied by the Internet Explorer.

8. Now select 'OK' and then have the Internet Explorer closed.

After restarting Internet Explorer, the changes would come into effect.
