How to enable phishing filter in Internet Explorer 7 and 8

Your computer holds lots of personal information about you, which can make it a target for internet fraudsters. 'Phishing' scams are fake emails and/or websites that try to trick users into giving away personal information about them, such as bank details and passwords.

Microsoft keeps a database of websites that are reported to be phishing sites. This means that, even if you accidentally click a known phishing link, the Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer will help prevent you from accidentally providing sensitive information.

Note: In Internet Explorer 8, Phishing Filter has been updated and is now replaced by SmartScreen Filter. SmartScreen Filter has all the features of Phishing Filter, with the addition of software that detects malicious software and downloads.

Setting up Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer 7:

1. Click "Tools", select Phishing Filter and then click on "Turn On Automatic Website Checking".

2. In the Phishing Filter window select the option to turn on automatic phising filter and click "OK".

When the button in a phishing mail is clicked, Internet Explorer will immediately warn you that you are accessing a reported phishing website, and the Address bar will turn red. In internet explorer 7, Phishing Filter will automatically block and alert you when you try to access known scam sites and suspicious sites.

Sometimes it"s possible to spot clues on a phishing site that warn the visitor, but some phishing sites can be highly convincing, and seem genuine. Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer 7 uses technology that can help spot a fake site.

How Phishing Filter fights with the phishers:

When Phishing Filter is turned on, it helps to detect all phishing sites. Below is the description of how the phising filter works.

Safe sites list: When you access a website online Phishing Filter will first check the safe sites list that is stored locally in your computer. If the website that you tried to view is on that list, Phishing Filter does not block Internet Explorer to open the site. It is recommended to perform windows update regularly as the safe websites list gets updated through the Windows Update.

Phishing sites list: If Phising filter finds that the website you are accessing is not in the safe sites list, it will check using the Microsoft URL Reputation Service which is the engine behind the Phishing Filter. If the website address is not on the list, the phishing filter will prompt Internet Explorer to block you from accessing the site and it will also turn the color of the address bar to Red.

Smart Screen Filter (Internet Explorer 8)

Smart Screen Filter also checks the websites you are trying to access if it is a phishing sites. It also checks whether you are downloading any softwares from malicious software sites. It will also stop you from accessing phishing websites and other malicious websites which can lead to your identity being stolen. When the Smart Screen Filter is turned on, if you try to visit a website that"s been reported, you"ll see the below screens. This will recommend you not to continue accessing that website.

To turn on Smart Screen Filter in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8):

Open Internet Explorer, click on the "Safety" button. Select the SmartScreen Filter, and then click "Turn On SmartScreen Filter". In the new Microsoft SmartScreen Filter window that comes up select the option to turn on the smart screen filter and then click on "OK".
